The State Board Of Technical Education and Training (as it was named earlier) was set up in UP in May 1958. The Board conducted its first examination in 1960. The Board’s name was changed to Board Of Technical Education in 1962 and it also gained statutory status(which means it has a status by a law passed by the legislature in the same year. The board is headquartered in Lucknow in Uttar Pradesh. In the initial years, the curriculum was prepared by the different affiliated institutions but after 1980 the Board has centralized curriculum development. It is now developed by IRDT, Kanpur and the Board examines and approves the curriculum developed by them and prescribes it to the affiliated institutions.
The primary function of the board is to declare the exam schedule, organize annual exams and declaring the results. In 1962 the Board held the examination of about 2500 students, in three major disciplines- Civil, Electrical and Mechanical Engineering. And there were only 25 affiliated Institutions. Today there are more than 2.5 lakh students in the 60 different disciplines in the institutions affiliated to the Board. BTEUP is affiliated with around 498 government colleges, and even some private ones and the number keeps on increasing.
